Happy Approachable Day …

Happy Approachable Day …

Over the last few months I have been told I am approachable, very very approachable, and I have also been told I am most definitely not approachable.  And to be honest this is not a new thing for me … I have been told this many times through my career, and work life.  A few weeks back my approach to how I handle things was also questioned, by someone who’s opinion I value.

So it got me thinking …

I know that I battle to approach certain things in life … for some of you who have been on my life lesson emails for some time now will know I started 2016 with the view that I would approach things head on, or at least try my best to (I referred to it as always going through the front door, if you remember). And while I was thinking about all this approachability stuff,  I found myself thinking about that again too.

Approachable …
I know I want to be approachable.

So what does it actually mean:
Approachable ~ friendly and easy to talk to ~ friendly; welcoming; pleasant; agreeable; congenial; affable; well disposed; obliging; communicative; open; hospitable, helpful
Unapproachable ~ not welcoming or friendly ~ aloof; distant; remote; detached; reserved; withdrawn; guarded; unresponsive; unfriendly; unsympathetic; unsociable; cool; cold; icy; chilly; stuffy; frigid; stiff; formal; dispassionate (don’t you like how there are so many meanings to the negative one haha)
Approach ~ a way of dealing with a situation or problem ~ attitude; slant; perspective; point of view; viewpoint; outlook; line of attack; line of action

And when I put out the meaning of it all, it all became very clear to me …

I can confidently tell you all, hand on my heart, that I AM APPROACHABLE. Without a doubt.
I am only unapproachable when someone needs to talk to me about something that comes with “bad news” … so, let me give you an example: when I have been asking for something over and over, and by the 7th time I am slightly irritated that it still hasn’t been done … I can believe I will seem to be fairly unapproachable, but let’s be honest that is purely because you are poop scared to eventually have to face me …
When I think back to all the times I have been considered unapproachable, it is because that person doesn’t want to approach me … 99% of the time anyway.
And if this is the case, I am okay with that, as again, I know I am approachable. I am everything it says approachable is (and I pride myself on that).

So … I hope you all have a super approachable day … because approachability comes down to the person who needs to approach or not, and not the other way around …  you either open to approach something, or you are not. And you need to look yourself in the mirror as to why you don’t want to approach something or someone, and work with that … don’t just label the person unapproachable.
