Episode 15 | Buying for a month versus a week | Organized Joy

Episode 15 | Buying for a month versus a week | Organized Joy

Today we discussing whether you buy for a month or a week. For me, I think there is place to do both, and I do both. You should plan what you need for a month, the staples, the usual’s, the have to have items – like washing powder, milk, and coffee … you need to make a shopping list of these items, that you can buy in a month – remember this list should be made up of items that won’t go off right. We going to create a list, that each month you print, and then just before the weekend after pay day, you tick off the items you need, and your list is ready. Having a standard list means you never forget anything. I also stick this list up on the fridge, pretty soon after the end of the last month, and as I open the last peanut butter (for example) I tick it off, as I will need to get another end of the month, so the next month I don’t run out. This was you know exactly what you need. You are planned! As you get paid, you go and do your monthly shop for all that is on the list … done, you have the whole month, and you won’t run out of key items in the household, all the favorites. Now what about all the items you need to buy each week, the items that won’t last a whole month … all the eating things, like salad, and bread, and meat. You need another shopping list for all this stuff. And each week this list goes up on your fridge, again, and again, you tick off each week what you need.
And I go do the weekly shop either on a Friday on my way home from work, or a Saturday afternoon … I just grab the list off the fridge and off I go. I can assure you that you will save money doing this, and be more organised because you won’t run out of something and have to make a trip to the shops to get one thing, when you could’ve used that time to watch your kids football game, or have a coffee with a friend to recharge. You will also begin to see exactly what you spend in a month on food … which will help you budget. I have created a monthly template and a weekly template, but I have used all my shopping items for now, as I cannot begin to know every single item on sale in SA stores (I wish!) or what you and your family like. So you must take this template and add to it or delete my peanut butter … in fact what I actually do is every so often I review the list and make changes to make it as current as possible, because let’s be honest when you start the list you may be in a fat free phase of life, and add fat free long life milk, but in a few months when you realise that isn’t really necessary, you want to change it to low fat long life milk.
